St. Aidan’s Cottage, Marygate, Holy Island, Berwick upon Tweed, Northumberland, TD15 2SD

St. Aidan’s Cottage is a delightful two bedroom cottage located along Marygate, one of the principle streets in Holy Island village. Marygate is a quaint street of immaculate stone cottages, terraced houses and enchanting local shops, pubs and cafes. At ground floor the property comprises sitting room, guest WC and separate kitchen diner with back door out to a shared paved courtyard. Upstairs the sleeping arrangements are perfectly laid out with two immaculate double bedrooms both offering their own en-suite bathroom.

As you leave the property you can turn left up the high street and enjoy a wander round the town or take a side street to one of the many beaches or enchanting country walks. Turning right out of the front door you are just seconds from the breath taking view that is Lindisfarne Castle, follow the road or the beach and you’ll be at the castle in no time, depending on how often you stop to take in the idyllic scenery and fresh sea air.

The property is located on an Island, easy to reach by car but only during low tide, so please take a look at the links below regarding tide times and living or staying on the Island before viewing.

Area Insights

The Holy Island of Lindisfarne is the popular but perfectly tranquil Island off the Northumberland coast. Home to attractions like Lindisfarne Castle, the 2019 garden of the year The Gertrude Jekyll Garden, and St. Aidan’s Winery, the island offers a variety of attractions to inhabitants and visitors alike, not to mention breath taking scenery and endless sea views. During low tide Holy Island gives access to St. Cuthbert’s Island, a smaller island which has a narrower window for visits between tides but is a great spot for bird and seal spotting. Holy Island access is at the mercy of the tides and there are times throughout each 24 hour period during which is it not possible to drive onto or off the Island. Please see link below for official government crossing times.

The Island Itself is mostly serviced by the local coastal towns and cities, however the local post office sells basic and essential food and domestic products as well as souvenirs. The Village Hall hosts local events and there are nearby cafes, pubs and restaurants in the village.

The nearest supermarkets can be found in Berwick upon Tweed around 20 minutes away by car however the major chains will deliver groceries during low tide times too.

The main visitor attraction, Lindisfarne Castle, abandoned during the reign of Henry VIII, was converted in 1901 into an Arts and Crafts style holiday home for Country Life magazine founder Edward Hudson by architect Sir Edward Lutyens and overlooks the Island’s famous gardens.

Holy Island forms part of the Northumberland Coast Area of Natural Beauty, along which can be found a number of stunning coastal towns and beaches such Goswick, Cheswick, Seahouses and Craster.
