Situation

North College sits in a private yet central position in the historic city of Elgin, between Aberdeen (66 miles) to the East and Inverness (39 miles) to the West. Elgin, with its famous 13th Century Cathedral, provides an excellent range of amenities. It offers numerous medical practices and a Hospital, plus several highly regarded primary schools and two secondary schools. Private schooling is available at Aberlour House and Gordonstoun School, about 6 miles away, and Moray College campus forms part of the University of the Highlands and Islands. There are several supermarkets in Elgin, including an M&S Food Hall and a number of local and national shops. It is a short walk (5 mins) over the river Lossie from North College House to the world famous woollen mill, Johnston’s of Elgin, which is renowned for its Cashmere and fantastic café. Walking into the city centre (10min) there are several restaurants, additional cafes, pubs, a leisure centre and a cinema. Cooper Park, situated directly on the boundary of North College House, hosts numerous sporting pursuits including well-attended tennis, cricket and bowling clubs and a boating pond. Elgin offers a regular train service which takes you further afield to Inverness (about 45 mins) and Aberdeen (about 1.30 mins). Whilst Aberdeen (Europe’s oil capital) is one of the UK’s wealthiest cities full of desirable shops and restaurants. Aberdeen also offers an International Airport (61 miles).

Elgin is in the county of Moray which is famous for its mild climate. Moray has a beautiful and varied countryside with a coastline of rich agricultural land, prosperous fishing villages and wide, open beaches. The upland areas to the south are sparsely populated and provide dramatic scenery, some of which forms part of the Cairngorm National Park. This unspoilt landscape provides a wide range of leisure and sporting opportunities including fishing on the world famous Spey and Findhorn rivers, skiing at The Lecht and Cairngorm range, sailing and walking. The History of North College

North College is perhaps the most historically and architecturally interesting building in a small city full of noteworthy properties. It is believed that the original house was built within the grounds of the Cathedral in the 13th Century, soon after the Cathedral was built and that a small part of this building is embodied in the present house. It is understood that North College was used as the Precentor’s Manse when the Bishop was visiting the Cathedral from nearby Spynie Palace. After the Reformation, North College was purchased in 1568 by Sir Alexander Dunbar of Burgie and became a fortified house with the original stone staircase believed to be in existence behind the drawing room wall. The Dunbar coat of arms dated 1520 with the motto ‘ornat fortem prudentia’ is carved in stone at the front of the house. In the 1920’s, the house was owned by Sir George Cooper, a well-known Elgin philanthropist who donated the present day Cooper Park to the Burgh of Elgin. More recently, the house has been renovated, extended and improved by the current owners to create a wonderful family home along with excellent business premises in the form of the current Moray Osteopath’s practice rooms and a useful let property / additional accommodation in the form of the adjoining wing.

 

Development Potential

North College and the surrounding grounds provide considerable scope for development (subject to obtaining all necessary consents).
