Area Insights

Blacksmith’s Cottage is positioned in the heart of Ayton, an incredibly popular village in the heart of the Berwickshire countryside. The properties are within an easy walk of all the amenities one would expect from a thriving Borders village which include a very well-regarded primary school, play park, a well stocked village shop and post office. The Hemelvaart Bier Café is well known throughout the local area and hosts a variety of fantastic events such as comedy and music evenings.

Nearby Reston (3 miles away) is soon to offer a train station which will be a sub-station of the main East Coastline connecting London to Aberdeen which will make commuting to Newcastle or Edinburgh very quick and easy. Otherwise, there is a main line station at Berwick upon Tweed (7 miles away).

There are a number of larger towns near Ayton, the closest being Eyemouth which is approximately 3 miles northeast. Eyemouth is a fishing port with a picturesque harbour and a sandy beach. It has an excellent range of amenities including a Co-op supermarket, and local shops such as a first-class butcher, home bakery and fishmonger. Leisure facilities include a swimming pool and fitness centre, several public houses and restaurants and marine activities such as diving.

The historic market town of Berwick upon Tweed lies 7 miles south of Ayton, just off the A1 in Northumberland. Berwick is home to all the major supermarket chains, good local shopping, a number of historical attractions within its mediaeval walls, numerous restaurants and cafes and the Maltings arts centre.

The surrounding countryside offers an excellent choice of attractions such as castles and historic houses, the beautiful coastline around St Abbs, Coldingham, and North Northumberland and the Cheviot Hills and Northumberland National Park.

Country and sporting pursuits are widely available and there are several golf courses within a short drive including Eyemouth, Dunbar, Goswick and Magdalene Fields in Berwick.

Ayton is a quiet and peaceful village but offers excellent links to Edinburgh, Newcastle and even London. The A1 truck road provides easy commutable access to Scotland’s capital city and Newcastle and Berwick upon Tweed’s mainline train station offers a regular service up and down the country, with London being only a 3 ½ hour journey away.
